There are extensive archives in files on over 80 subjects for visitors to access for research. These are currently being digitised.
An archive of artefacts, photographs and documents make the Heritage Centre an important record of the history of East Cowes and its surrounds. The centre is happy to take new archive and artefact material, particularly relating to East Cowes and Whippingham.
Members of the public can use the files to do their own research while the centre is open. In addition there are several business directories and copies of census material relating to East Cowes and Whippingham. There is also access to burial records in East and West Cowes and a selection of Island-themed books for reference.
The Heritage Centre success is due to the support of the local residents and the dedication of a group of volunteers and stewards. They will help you with any queries or questions about the History of East Cowes. If they don’t know they will know someone who does.
All the stewards are volunteers and give at least an hour and a half a week of their time and expertise. Two stewards are needed at all times. More volunteers are welcome.
The Heritage Centre started with very little archive material. The majority of information has come from local residents and the general public.
We are still being given fresh information and are very grateful for any new material and artefacts supplied. Photos and documents are normally copied and the originals returned to their owners. Contact us to email photographs.
By arrangement staff at the centre can carry out research for you. This service is chargeable and the cost will be based on the length of time involved. Please contact the centre if you require this service.
